Bonus Feature / Bonus Game |
Many of the more advanced online slot machines offer the chance of winning a go on a "bonus game" or feature. These are essentially sub-games, often simple multiple-choice games, with the chance of winning extra credits. Such bonus games are normally accessed by hitting a special symbol, or combination.
Most online slot machines allow you to play with different values of "coins", e.g. from $0.25 to $1.00. The jackpots offered by the machine will be listed in coins, hence if a slot machines jackpot is 1,000 coins, and you select play with $0.25 coins, the jackpot will be $250, however if you choose to play with $1.00 coins, the machines jackpot becomes $1,000! The different coin sizes on a single slot machine mean players can all game on the same machine regardless of budget.
The amount you get for matching a particular set of symbols. Many machines have multiple jackpots of increasing difficulty and value. There are two types of jackpot, static and progressive. With static jackpots, the amount paid out by the slot machine for winning is a fixed number of coins.
With progressive jackpots, all machines offering a particular game are linked, and a small percentage of all the players losses on these machines are added to the jackpot, which over time accumulates. When a players wins the progressive jackpot, they receive all the money currently accumulated, which can be hundreds of thousands of dollars!
The maximum number of coins playable on a particular slot machine. This number is important, because often, only playing the maximum bet will unlock all the pay lines on a machine. It is particularly important on progressive slot machines, since often, only by playing the max bet are you eligible to win the progressive jackpot.
This is the line on a slot machine where rows of symbols must match up in order to win. Classic 3-reel slot machines often have only a single line, while more modern machines can have over ten pay lines. Obviously the more pay lines, the greater your chance of matching the symbols, but many machines only activate additional pay lines when you increase the number of coins you play per spin.
A list of the various payout's a machine offers for getting particular combinations of symbols on a pay line. Also lists rules for extra features such as bonus games.
The rotating wheels in original casino slots with the symbols printed on the edge. Some online slot machines simulate these reels almost exactly, while other, more modern slot machines, simply have windows where the symbols change. Each reel will produce a column of symbols, with one or more rows being a pay line.
The various "pictures" that change when a slot machine is spun. Matching rows of symbols with the rows printed on the pay table of that machine will result in a win. Certain symbols will have special meanings on particular machines, such as activating bonus games.
A symbol which, when it occurs on a pay line can be substituted for any other symbol to make a winning row. Some wild symbols also act as multipliers, increasing the amount of money won from that combination.
